Pick one other concept in the book that you feel needs further discussion?
The concept I feel that needs further discussion is the concept of culture being a dynamic. Cultures are consistently changing therefore people have to learn new behaviors and cultural norms change as well. Intercultural contact is not bout memorizing the do’s and don’ts on how to act. For just as soon as you’ve learned a rule about how to communicate with the “natives” of a culture, you’ll probably find that the rule is obsolete (Trenholm, 347). Being prepared for intercultural contact is to be open and sensitive to all kinds of differences that occur between cultures and developing the ability to learn by observing.
The cultures are always changing I agree that it must be focused more just so that we can adjust to them faster. It is hard to focus on them just because there are no set rules or set boundaries, we are living in a big melting pot and with changes always taking place it may be harder to see from a "book" point of view, but with the discussions it may help other students see the different cultures out there and there feedback and opinions.
ReplyDeleteHi therza! I enjoyed reading your post. I agree that the concept of culture being dynamic needs futher discussion. I liked how you stated that cultures are always changing and therefore people and their behaviors change as well. I think that sub cultures are a great example of that. I also agree that intersultural contact is not just monitoring the do's and dont's of communication but to be sensitive and open to other's cultural norms. I also like the way you quoted Trenholm when stating that cultural rules can change over time or can become osbolete. I feel that everyone should be sensitive and open to other cultures. Great post.
